What Color is the Ocean?
Perception
as Portrait
An interactive art performance-installation, which invites participant-viewers to share their impressions/thoughts regarding the color of the ocean. The interviews then serve as the basis for an art piece created by Willieme. The work offers a meditation on perception as well as on the themes of memory, travel, migration, and rooted/uprootedness.
Which is Your Ocean?
The ocean is at once global and local.
All oceans have the same form: a body of water with a horizon line. And yet, they have their own identities, histories and colors.
We tend to think of the ocean as blue. But what kind of blue is it? Ultramarine, cobalt, cerulean, or turquoise? Or perhaps green? Maybe purple even?
Oceans are viscerally connected to stories of departure/arrival; rootedness/uprootedness; immigration; travel/movement; as well as discovery and change.
WCIO leads participants to a deeper perception of color while stimulating a meditation/reflection/sharing on experiences of immigration/departures/arrivals/and travel.
Willieme then integrates participants’ sharing as a point of departure for an artwork/installation.
